“Recorded live in concert at their home studio on April 25th 2014, LIVE From The DOJO captures the 5 piece incarnation of psychedelic wizards Jouis live in all their resplendent glory. Both Harry and I are massive Jouis-heads, so when we were sent this recording it took us right back to hearing this band for the first time and being blown away all over again. It was around this time that we at None More Records first heard, saw and immediately fell in love with the band, booking them for some of their earliest shows in London, seeing them live at every opportunity and in 2019 putting out their incredible sophomore record ‘Mind Bahn’, by then a 3 piece.
To the release then. The setting for the evening, The Point, an artist commune in Brighton, was the bands home and studio for a good number of years. The gig itself, an intimate friends and family affair just after the recording of their stellar debut album ‘Dojo’. Homemade negronis balancing on Leslie cabinets, cans from the corner shop in the fridge, a soft haze of marijuana smoke in the air. A blissful late spring evening in Brighton.
The band launch straight into their jazz and folk tinged psychedelia, soaring harmonies and hypnotic grooves. The setlist consists mostly of tracks from ‘Dojo’ with added live improvisation and jamming, except for ‘(Soundcheck)’, a previously unreleased jam that’s just wonderful, showcasing the bands staggering ability right from the start. The songs continue to soar, sounding spectacular and fresh, with the band as tight as can be, having perfected the songs and arrangements for recording. The harmonies are incredible and the musicianship outstanding, but it’s the strength in the collective that’s really the essence of Jouis’ unique and beautiful sound. It’s wonderful to have such a moment captured in such good recording quality and an honour for us to now share it with you. Effortlessly sailing between delicate melodic moments, off-kilter grooves and full scale prog rock, LIVE From The DOJO captures a brilliant band on a perfect evening.”
